Glass Neon Signs

Glass neon signs have a rich history and have left an impressionable footprint on downtown America.

Neon signs have been a popular form of advertising and decoration for over a century. These bright and colorful signs are made of glass tubes filled with neon or other gases, which are illuminated by electrical currents. The neon sign is a fascinating piece of technology that has stood the test of time, and it is still widely used today.

Neon signs are created by passing an electric current through a glass tube filled with a gas. The glass tube is bent into the desired shape, and the ends are sealed with metal electrodes. When the electric current is passed through the tube, the gas emits light in a specific color.

Neon Colors

Neon signs are signs that use neon gas-filled tubes to create bright, eye-catching displays. The color of a neon sign is determined by the type of gas and the coating on the inside of the tube.

The most common gas used in neon signs is neon gas, which emits a bright red light when an electric current is passed through it. However, other gases can also be used to create different colors. Argon gas, for example, emits a blue-green light, while krypton gas emits a pale blue light. Other gases, such as helium and xenon, can also be used to create different colors, but they are less common.

In addition to the gases used to create the light, neon signs can also be colored using different types of coatings on the inside of the glass tube. For example, a red coating can be used to create a red neon sign, while a blue coating can be used to create a blue neon sign.

Common neon sign colors:

  • Red neon is created by using neon gas and a red phosphor coating on the inside of the tube
  • Orange neon is created by using neon gas and an orange phosphor coating
  • Yellow neon is created by using neon gas and a yellow phosphor coating
  • Green neon is created by using neon gas and a green phosphor coating
  • Blue neon is created by using argon gas and a blue phosphor coating
  • Purple neon is created by using argon and neon gases and a purple phosphor coating

Pros of Glass Neon

Visual and retro appeal is probably the biggest contributing factor to businesses choosing glass neon over more modern LED neon. Traditional glass neon signs simply have that “look” and “feel” that other forms of neon simply don’t possess.

One of the main advantages of using neon signs is that they are highly visible and can be seen from a distance. They are also energy efficient and can last for many years if they are properly maintained. Additionally, neon signs can be customized to create a wide variety of shapes and colors, making them a versatile choice for advertising and decoration.

Cons of Glass Neon

Glass neon signs can be expensive to produce, install, and difficult to maintain. Additionally, neon signs can be dangerous if they are not properly installed or if they are damaged. They do require proper care to maximize the sign’s lifetime.

The longevity and durability of neon signs depend on several factors. The quality of the glass tubes, the quality of the neon gas, and the quality of the electrical current all play a role in the longevity and durability of the sign. A well-made neon sign can last for many years, while a poorly made sign may only last a few months.
